Do the best you can until you know better, then when you know better, do better. Maya Angelou
Since becoming a Mum I’ve found myself often saying ‘I can only do my best’ when things have started to overwhelm me. After all, it’s been a completely life changing experience and I’m learning every step of the way, just as baby C is too. So this week I decided to approach my first project the same way.
I was inspired by a simple idea I pinned almost a year ago to my ‘Creative How To’ board and felt it was a great way to start. As a new Mum I didn’t want anything that involved too much thought process and was something that I could achieve easily whilst still learning to use my time in the most productive way. I’m so happy I did, as it’s been really rewarding.
Doodle drawings. You can do them anywhere at anytime with few materials. I worked on this one a little at a time. And found it particularly good for winding down at night, as it’s so easy to get lost in drawing little shapes, patterns and lines.
My creative process involved tracing the circles (I used a small coffee mug) overlapping each other. Then drawing whatever patterns came to mind in each shape, inside the circles. At first I didn’t have to think too hard about what to draw but towards the end I was looking all around me for inspiration. And it was a lot of fun trying new ideas, because if I made any type of mistake I’d just turn that line or shape into something different.
For this project I used my A4 Fabriano sketchbook which has the most beautiful paper to work on, along with my Artline 0.2 drawing system pen (I used one for the whole piece) and 15 year old Rotring .07 mechanical pencil for setting up the page.
My first steps for this project have now been taken and I’m so excited to continue this artistic journey.
I know I can do this and with each lesson I learn every week, my best can only get better.
What first steps have you taken today?
